Terry

Uncut loops of thread standing up from the base cloth. Every loop is exposed surface, which is why terry absorbs more water than any other weave.

It is also the heaviest and the slowest to dry. A heavy terry robe hung in a small unventilated bathroom stays damp, and a robe that stays damp develops a smell within a week.

Terry is the right choice for coming out of a bath and actually drying yourself with the robe. It is the wrong choice for a humid bathroom with no window.

Waffle

A honeycomb weave: flat cloth with a raised grid. Far less thread exposed than terry, so less water absorbed per square metre — but the structure holds air, and it dries quickly.

The result is a light robe that feels cool, packs small, and is dry again by the next morning.

This is the spa weave, and spas use it for practical reasons rather than aesthetic ones: it launders fast and it suits a warm room. For a hot climate, a small bathroom, or travel, waffle is usually the better robe even though it dries you less.

Velour

Terry with the loops sheared flat on one side, producing a smooth plush face.

It looks and feels the most luxurious of the three, and it absorbs the least. Cutting the loops removes the exposed surface that made terry absorbent in the first place — the fibres are now cut ends lying flat rather than loops standing up.

Most velour robes are velour on the outside and terry on the inside, which is the sensible compromise: the smooth face shows, the absorbent loops touch you.

Velour is for wearing, not for drying. As a robe to sit in with coffee it is the nicest of the three; as a towel it is the worst.

Weight, in numbers

GSM — grams per square metre — is the figure that tells you what you are buying, and it matters more than the weave name.

Around 300 to 400 is light: waffle robes, summer terry, quick drying.

Around 400 to 600 is the middle, and where most household robes sit.

Above 600 is hotel weight. Substantial, very absorbent, and slow to dry — genuinely too much for a small bathroom.

A lighter waffle-weave robe and a heavy terry one are different products for different rooms rather than better and worse versions of the same thing.

Choosing

Cold house, big bathroom with a window, you want to dry off in it — heavy terry.

Small bathroom, no extractor, humid climate — waffle, and it is not a compromise.

You wear a robe in the morning rather than after a bath — velour, or velour outside with terry inside.

Travel — waffle, for the weight and the packing.

Shared household robe — mid-weight terry around 450 GSM, which nobody finds wrong.
