Waffle robes get bought for the look and kept for a reason nobody anticipates: they are dry again by morning.
That single property decides whether this or a heavy terry robe is the right purchase, and it has more to do with your bathroom than with your preferences.
The weave
A honeycomb structure — flat cloth with a raised grid — rather than the standing loops of terry.
Less thread is exposed to water, so less water is absorbed. But the grid traps air and the fabric is thin, so it dries quickly and it breathes.
In Turkish cotton the weave holds its shape well. Long-staple cotton has fewer fibre ends per length of thread, which is why it stays soft rather than going scratchy after a season of washing, and why it sheds far less lint than short-staple cotton.
What it is like to wear
Light. Noticeably lighter than terry, and cool rather than warm — the honeycomb does not insulate the way a dense pile does.

Weight in GSM. Waffle robes typically sit around 300 to 400, which is light by design. A waffle robe advertised at hotel weight is unusual and probably not really waffle.
Seam finishing at the cuffs and hem, where robes fail first.
Belt loops that are stitched through, not just tacked. The belt loop tearing is the most common complaint about any robe.
Length. Waffle robes are often cut shorter, and the difference between mid-calf and knee-length matters more than people expect.
Caring for it
Wash warm rather than hot, with less detergent than the packet suggests. Thick weaves hold detergent residue, and residue is what stiffens cotton and blocks absorbency over a year.
Skip fabric softener entirely. It coats the fibres in a waxy film, which reduces what little absorbency a waffle weave has to begin with — the one thing this robe cannot afford to lose.
Hang it spread out rather than folded over a hook. The advantage of a fast-drying robe disappears if it dries in a fold.
A short tumble lifts the weave and keeps it looking crisp. Line drying alone leaves waffle slightly flat, which is cosmetic rather than functional but noticeable.
The verdict
Judged as a lightweight robe for a warm room, a Turkish cotton waffle robe does its job well and solves the damp-bathroom problem that heavy terry creates.
Judged as a replacement for a towel it will not satisfy, and anyone in a cold house who wants to be wrapped in something substantial should buy terry instead.
